Gamini Dissanayake Foundation

Over the last 15 years, the Foundation has initiated many activities in keeping with its aims and objectives.


March 1995
Marked the 53rd Birth Anniversary of the late leader, the Foundation’s Head Office in Colombo was ceremonially inaugurated by Prime Minister Sirimavo R D Bandaranaike; while the Leader of the Opposition, Ranil Wickremasinghe, unveiled the Name Board.

July 1995
Gamini Dissanayake Commemoration Society was set up as an affiliate, specially tasked to organize commemorative events to mark Mr. Dissanayake’s Birth Anniversary in March and his Death Anniversary in October.

October 1995
The Foundation established the Gamini Dissanayake Institute of Technology & Vocational Studies (GDITVS) in Kandy, marking the first phase of its outreach to youth from underprivileged and low-income families. The Institute was later relocated in Nuwara Eliya.

August 1996
The Foundation initiated the first of its fund raisers – a Benefit Cricket Match between Sri Lanka (World Champions 1996 led by Arjuna Ranatunga) and a World XI (led by Mohamed Azharuddin). This was played at the R Premadasa Stadium as a Day/Night ODI, under the patronage of Prime Minister Sirimavo R D Bandaranaike.

November 1996
The Gamini Dissanayake Education and Scholarship Fund was set up as an Approved Charity to attract donations and scholarships to sustain the work of the GDITVS.
